Grading Policy and Expectations

Expectations- We expect students to be prepared, respectful, and productive members of the class. In the case that a student does not abide by the class rules, he or she will receive a Behavior Communication (BC), or in an extreme case, will be assigned an immediate detention. Not coming to class prepared can result in a checkmark. Three checkmarks in a nine-week period will earn the student a BC. Three BC’s in one nine- week period will result in a detention. Cheating will not be tolerated and will result in a zero for the assignment and a yellow card.

Grading- Your child’s grades will be represented in points for all assignments, quizzes, and tests. Grades may be viewed online anytime and will be updated weekly. We strongly advise getting online with your child to view grades, comments, missing work, etc. Your student will receive two grades for this class, one covering language arts standards and one covering the reading standards. When students fail to show skill mastery on certain assignments, quizzes, and tests, an opportunity will often be given to redo assignments or retake assessments to show improvement.  Please view our Schoology checklist with your child to stay current with the due dates and other happenings in our class.

Blended Learning-   This year, we will continue incorporating a 1:1 blended learning concept through the use of iPads. Blended learning incorporates the use of technology along with traditional teaching methods to motivate and engage students in learning. We will provide access to many of our classroom materials through Schoology (our learning management system). Paper options will also be available and offered to students on a regular basis.

Independent Reading-   According to a study done in 2016, the researchers focused on "comparing the overall academic success of pleasure readers (sometimes referred to as independent readers) and non-pleasure readers.  According to Cullinan (2000), pleasure readers at all grade levels whom scored higher on standardized tests in all subject areas, developed greater reading comprehension skills, had increased fluency, and displayed higher levels of general knowledge.  However, in spite of the evidence that pleasure reading had a positive impact on student academics, the number of students who read for pleasure has declined at an alarming rate" (Whitten, Libby, et al 2016).  We are asking for your help to encourage your student to do the required 15 minutes of reading at home each evening.

Communication- We welcome and encourage communication from parents.  The quickest and most efficient way to reach us is through our email addresses or on the Remind App.

Meet Your Teachers

Mrs. Lippenga
Hi! I'm Mrs. Lippenga. I'm entering my 20th year teaching reading and language arts and beginning my tenth year at Marlington Middle School.  My husband (Tim), seven-year-old son (Jackson), and three-year-old daughter (Isla) make up my household.  I enjoy many different activities such as being outdoors, reading, exercising, and traveling.
Mrs. Burgess
Hi! I'm Mrs. Burgess. I have been teaching Language Arts since 2006 and I've been working in the Marlington district since 2015. I'm currently working on my master's degree from Kent State University. I live in Canton with my husband and two children, Madeline and Aydan. I love spending time with family, being outside, traveling, and, of course, reading :)  I'm looking forward to a great year!!
